Jonathan's Biography

I was born in Champaign, Illinois in 1952, but have moved
around quite a bit.  I graduated from high school in Maryland,
and got my BA in History from Colorado State University in 1974.
Following graduation I married and worked at a number of jobs
including farmhand, factory worker and church sexton.  After
completing a masters degree in public administration in 1978, I
joined the US Foreign Service and was posted in Bangladesh,
Australia and Washington DC.  In 1983 we moved to Bozeman,
Montana where I ran the city taxi company and helped raise our
three small children while my wife earned her architecture
degree.  In 1989 we moved to Indiana, and I completed a Ph.D.
in Public Policy from Indiana University in 1997.  After a year of
teaching at Indiana State University, I was hired by UAS to run
their Master of Public Administration program in 1998.

I met my wife Mary in Colorado and (as of 2008) we have had 33 years of
adventure together.  All three of our children benefited from a Juneau
education.  Emily graduated from the UAS Masters in Teaching (MAT)
program in 2007 and currently teaches high school science in Colorado.
Tia got her Bachelors from UAS in 2001 and her MAT in 2007.  She now
teaches 2nd and 3rd grades at the Juneau Charter School.  Justin
graduated from JDHS in 1999 and currently lives and works in Seattle.
Over the past decade Mary has worked for MRV Architects and SERRC.

My spiritual beliefs have always been extremely important to me.  I was
baptized an American Baptist and have attended a variety of churches
over the years.  In the late 80s Mary and I became Quakers and are
members of the Juneau Friends Meeting.

As a professor of public administration I have been intensely interested in
democracy and how a community of citizens can live and work together.

I was a member of the Juneau Personnel Board and the Human Rights
Commission before deciding to run for City Assembly in 2005.  I am a
Hospice Volunteer, a member of PFLAG and AWARE's Delta program.
“WE MUST RECOGNIZE THE FULL HUMAN EQUALITY OF ALL OF OUR PEOPLE –
BEFORE GOD, BEFORE THE LAW, AND IN THE COUNCILS OF GOVERNMENT. WE MUST
DO THIS, NOT BECAUSE IT IS ECONOMICALLY ADVANTAGEOUS – ALTHOUGH IT IS; NOT
BECAUSE THE LAWS OF GOD COMMAND IT – ALTHOUGH THEY DO; NOT BECAUSE
PEOPLE IN OTHER LANDS WISH IT SO. WE MUST DO IT FOR THE SINGLE AND
FUNDAMENTAL REASON THAT IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO.”
